How the Internet Is Loosening Our Grip on the Truth - The New York Times

"In a 2008 book, I argued that the internet would usher in a “post-fact” age. Eight years later, in the death throes of an election that features a candidate who once led the campaign to lie about President Obama’s birth, there is more reason to despair about truth in the online age.

Why? Because if you study the dynamics of how information moves online today, pretty much everything conspires against truth."

pela cochlea: Joan of Arc - Jennifer Warnes & Leonard Cohen IN MEMORIAM

For me, one of the most beautiful lyrics of American Song
Now the flames they followed Joan of Arc
    as she came riding through the dark;
no moon to keep her armour bright,
no man to get her through this very smoky night.
She said, "I'm tired of the war,
I want the kind of work I had before,
a wedding dress or something white
to wear upon my swollen appetite."

Well, I'm glad to hear you talk this way,
you know I've watched you riding every day
and something in me yearns to win
such a cold and lonesome heroine.
"And who are you?" she sternly spoke
to the one beneath the smoke.
    "Why, I'm fire," he replied,
"And I love your solitude, I love your pride."

"Then fire, make your body cold,
I'm going to give you mine to hold,"
    saying this she climbed inside
to be his one, to be his only bride.
And deep into his fiery heart
he took the dust of Joan of Arc,
and high above the wedding guests
he hung the ashes of her wedding dress.

It was deep into his fiery heart
he took the dust of Joan of Arc,
    and then she clearly understood
if he was fire, oh then she must be wood.
I saw her wince, I saw her cry,
I saw the glory in her eye.
Myself I long for love and light,
but must it come so cruel, and oh so bright?

O cantor Leonard Cohen, que completa 80 anos Foto: Chad Batka/The New York Times / NYT

O multifacetado artista Leonard Cohen Foto: Divulgação

PELA COCHLEA: Leonard Cohen Chelsea Hotel #2 Live IN MEMORIAM

I remember you well in the Chelsea Hotel,
you were talking so brave and so sweet,
giving me head on the unmade bed,
while the limousines wait in the street.
Those were the reasons and that was New York,
we were running for the money and the flesh.
And that was called love for the workers in song
probably still is for those of them left.
Ah but you got away, didn't you babe,
you just turned your back on the crowd,
you got away, I never once heard you say,
    I need you, I don't need you,
    I need you, I don't need you
and all of that jiving around.

pela cochlea: Loudon Wainwright III - I Had A Dream (Official Music Video)

    ,

I had a dream I don’t know what it meant
But I dreamed Donald Trump was our president
And there on election night right by his side
His flunky Chris Christie along for the ride

But it gets worse just wait there’s more
He made Jeff Sessions Secretary of War
And just like he promised he built him that wall
He blew up Cuba and he carpet bombed Montreal

I had a dream I woke up in a cold sweat
The Donald was elected in a huge upset
He made a bad deal with Putin a secret pact with Assad
Told the Pope where to go I swear to God
As for the Supreme Court he got to choose
He filled the vacancy up with Lyin’ Ted Cruz
His face was bright orange and his hair was just weird
But we were made great again, embarrassed and feared

Facebook’s failure: did fake news and polarized politics get Trump elected?

"Facebook will need to change its business model if it does want to address these editorial challenges. Currently, the truth of a piece of content is less important than whether it is shared, liked and monetized. These “engagement” metrics distort the media landscape, allowing clickbait, hyperbole and misinformation to proliferate. And on Facebook’s voracious news feed, the emphasis is on the quantity of posts, not spending time on powerful, authoritative, well-researched journalism.

The more we click, like and share stuff that resonates with our own world views the more Facebook feeds us with similar posts. This has progressively divided the political narrative into two distinct filter bubbles – one for conservatives and one for liberals (a blue feed and a red feed), pulling further and further apart in the run-up to election day. "

Leonard Cohen, Epic and Enigmatic Songwriter, Is Dead at 82 - The New York Times

"At some points, he was anything but prolific. He struggled for years to write some of his most celebrated songs, and he recorded just 14 studio albums in his career. Only the first qualified as a gold record in the United States for sales of 500,000 copies. But Mr. Cohen’s sophisticated, magnificently succinct lyrics, with their meditations on love sacred and profane, were widely admired by other artists and gave him a reputation as, to use the phrase his record company concocted for an advertising campaign in the early 1970s, “the master of erotic despair.”

pela cochlea: JUDY COLLINS & LEONARD COHEN - Suzanne 1976 IN MEMORIAM LEONARD COHEN

This is one of my most beloved songs of all time....

Suzanne takes you down to her place near the river,
You can hear the boats go by you can spend the night beside her,
And you know that she's half crazy but that's why you wanna be there,
And she feeds you tea and oranges that come all the way from China,
And just when you mean to tell her that you have no love to give her,
Then she gets you on her wavelength and she lets the river answer,
That you've always been her lover.

And you want to travel with her,
And you want to travel blind,
And you know that she will trust you,
For you've touched her perfect body with your mind.

    The Nation

pela cochlea: Wesley Stace “Mr. Tangerine Man”

Your mama must have told you:  “Donald, you can do no wrong
    You're handsome, big and strong
    You'll struggle hard and long
Despite your sacrifice, they’ll hate you
    Cos you’re ravishing"
When you look into the mirror
Tell me what is it you see?
Is it The One and Only Me?
Someone we all want to be?
    In your own reality
With your weirdo family & Casino Golf Club dreams
Amid the ruins of other schemes
     And Trump University
    And the many other gifts
    That you’ve been lavishing

After Donald Trump Was Elected President, Aaron Sorkin Wrote This Letter to His Daughter

"Well the world changed late last night in a way I couldn’t protect us from. That’s a terrible feeling for a father. I won’t sugarcoat it—this is truly horrible. It’s hardly the first time my candidate didn’t win (in fact it’s the sixth time) but it is the first time that a thoroughly incompetent pig with dangerous ideas, a serious psychiatric disorder, no knowledge of the world and no curiosity to learn has.
