Livros realmente já eram? Ninguem saqueou livrarias!

    Amplify’d from www.economist.com
Remember when books were worthy of burning?
RIOTING and books share a stormy history. Think of the so-called Bonfire of the Vanities in 1497, when Girolamo Savonarola and his band of religious followers roundly collected and set fire to mounds of “pagan” literature. Centuries later, torch-lit parades of right-wing German students burnt pillaged books in protest against what they saw as the creeping stain of Jewish intellectualism on national culture.

In London in 2011, however, bibliophiles can breathe easy: despite the riots, books have tended to stay safely on their shelves, their subtle power blithely overlooked.
But the underlying message for bookshops is hardly front-page news: looters, like more conventional consumers, are all too happy to ignore their wares.

Do All Dogs Go To Heaven? Trouble’s On Her Way!

Self-made hotel and real estate tycoon Leona Helmsley was right to name her pampered pooch Trouble. The ill-tempered Maltese was said to be a fitting companion to the legendary “Queen of Mean.” At the time of her caretaker’s death in 2007, Trouble was bequeathed 12 million dollars, inciting judgement from every corner of America. So it’s fitting that even in death Trouble seems to stir controversy, as her passing is shrouded in mystery. We hope Trouble finally finds peace, yet can’t help but wonder why the Maltese’s death was kept such a secret.

    Do Estadão:

Maybe one day, in the pitiless light of hindsight, it will become clear why a woman's false statements about her immigration status, made years ago, were deemed more pertinent to an accusation of attempted rape than the vaginal bruising she allegedly incurred during the encounter itself.

Never mind the Taliban it's the cats that are taking over in Afghanistan

    Amplify’d from www.independent.co.uk

Diplomatic game of cat and mouse in Kabul over embassy's feline friends

Cat supporters say their extermination would pave the way for pests to invade the embassy
There may be bombs going off across Afghanistan, a fraught relationship with President Hamid Karzai to preserve, and the small matter of restoring law and order before the troops go home and the money runs out. But diplomats with the US mission in Kabul have another problem on their hands: what to do about the cats.
"We basically can't go out at all," one diplomat confided. "We can't walk across the street; we have to take a tunnel. There are no kids, no families, and basically what we have is the cats. It's as close as we come to normality." But set against the pro-cat lobby are the sticklers for the rules. "I'm not anti-cat," said one senior diplomat. "I'm pro-public health."
Unknown activists pinned a letter, Taliban-style, to the wall of the Embassy pub, the Duck and Cover. "Warning," it read, above an image of two insurgent cats toting AK-47s. "We will break out our fellow comrades from your compound." Another pro-catter secretly distributed flyers picturing a cat posing as Che Guevara. "Viva la revolucion," it read.
The signs are all that America has stumbled into another escalating stalemate in Afghanistan.

    Amplify’d from www.bbc.co.uk
Ali Ferzat in hospital - picture released 25 August 2011

In one of his latest cartoons, Ali Ferzat shows President Assad sweatily clutching a suitcase while he tries to hitch a lift with the Libyan leader, Col Muammar Gaddafi, who is furiously driving a getaway car.

In one, President Assad is shown patiently white-washing the shadow of a huge security thug on a wall, while the real man stands untouched. The caption reads: "Lifting the emergency law".

Another shows Mr Assad flexing in uniform in front of a mirror that reflects back a dominant, muscular image, overshadowing his puny figure.

Syrian activists say Mr Ferzat was forced out of his car before dawn in Damascus, beaten and dumped at the side of a road.

Rebeldes conquistam Tripoli e põe fim a polêmica: nem Khadafi nem Gaddadi nem Qadhafi, o certo é Gathafi

    Amplify’d from www1.folha.uol.com.br

    Onda de Revoltas
Muammar Gaddafi, Muamar Khadafi, Muammar al-Gathafi, Momar Kadaffi.

Jerry Leiber Dies at 78: 5 Songs to Remember the Music Legend - veja os clips

Ouvindo Ian McCulloch: Hey, that´s no way to say goodbye - de Leonard Cohen

I loved you in the morning, our kisses deep and warm,

your hair upon the pillow like a sleepy golden storm,

yes many loved before us, I know that we are not new,

in city and in forest they smiled like me and you,

but let's not talk of love or chains and things we can't untie,

your eyes are soft with sorrow,

Hey, that's no way to say goodbye.

    Amplify’d from www.nytimes.com

The Scramble for Access to Libya’s Oil Wealth Begins

Even before Libyan rebels could take full control of Tripoli, Foreign Minister Franco Frattini of Italy said on state television Monday that the Italian oil company Eni “will have a No. 1 role in the future” in the North African country.

Mr. Frattini even reported that Eni technicians were already on their way to eastern Libya to restart production.
The awkward exchange suggested that the scramble to secure access to Libya’s oil wealth is already on.

How did Tripoli fall so suddenly?

    Fadel Lamen
I saw firsthand the level of coordination between NATO and the Libyan opposition’s Transitional National Council, and its systematic strategy of capturing, controlling, and then protecting liberated land. Compared with the ragtag back-and-forth fighting we saw in the early days of the uprising, the opposition forces in the western front used different tactics and organized themselves better
Tripoli was never meant to be invaded from the east regardless of how much the rebel fighters wished for that. So for months, while the Al-Briga battles raged in the east, the rebels in the west trained in the Nafoosa mountain camps. The new philosophy: train forces who can sneak back to their own cities, well armed, in order to fight from within the cities when the time comes.
awiyah brigade soldiers planted within the city provided an outside-inside punch that surprised and overwhelmed Gaddafi’s forces. The same tactic in Tripoli yielded even better results,

Deu no New York Times: Rafinha Bastos

    Amplify’d from www.nytimes.com

A Brazilian’s Comic Mania: Social Media

When an Internet research group recently released a study concluding that the most influential person in the Twitter universe was Rafinha Bastos, a Brazilian comedian who came in well ahead of President Obama, Conan O’Brien and Kim Kardashian, the English-speaking world was predictably baffled. “Who is @RafinhaBastos?” Wired magazine asked.
“Stand-up comedy is an imported format, but this new generation sees it as a platform for self-expression and has learned to use it with a lot of intelligence.”
“A wedding is a much more happy occasion for a woman than for a man,” he observes in one of his routines. “It’s not by accident that at the ceremony she wears white and he wears black.

“Men were not born for long-lasting relationships. Why do you think a dog is a man’s best friend? Because it’s a faithful companion? No, because the damn thing dies in 14 years. When it comes time to choose a pet, you’re never going to see a man pick a turtle, which sticks around for 90 years.”

Via IRIS: Last Ride - dir Glendyn Ivin (Australia, 2009)

    Sean Penn vs. Terrence Malick

    penn_opt.jpg
    Posted by Richard Brody

I didn’t at all find on the screen the emotion of the script, which is the most magnificent one that I’ve ever read. A clearer and more conventional narrative would have helped the film without, in my opinion, lessening its beauty and its impact. Frankly, I’m still trying to figure out what I’m doing there and what I was supposed to add in that context! What’s more, Terry himself never managed to explain it to me clearly.
“The Tree of Life” is a marvel, Penn is very good in it—but Malick wasn’t shooting it for the pleasure or the benefit of the actors.
The star system, the flatteries of celebrity—and, for that matter, the temperament that makes a person become an actor in the first place—contribute much to an actor’s sense that a movie is, or should be, all about him. There are some movies—and some great ones—in which this is so. But in “The Tree of Life,” Penn’s unhappy and unexpected less really is more.
